Largely ignored by historians, Elio Quercioli was a Communist, whose approach was both orthodox and critical, traditionalist and modern. He was tied to the organizational and power structures of the Italian Communist Party in Rome, but was also a proud Milanese, due to his origins, culture, conscience, spirit, and modus operandi. This article examines the complexity of Quercioli’s life by placing it in the framework of the relations he established with Thomas Fina, the American consul in Milan on the one hand, and the complex interplay between national politics and the debate between Rome and Milan around the historic compromise on the other. Based on a fresh approach, this article highlights the times, themes and purposes of Quercioli’s intense political commitment between the 1950s and the 1990s. It highlights Quercioli’s controversy with Alberganti, the last battles he carried out in defence of the primacy of politics, his thirty years of activities at Palazzo Marino, and his continuous relations with Americans.
