This section presents some of the results of a research on the Chinese new towns conducted between 2015 and 2017 by a group of architects, urban planners, geographers, anthropologists, landscape designers and city historians. The inquiry took place from three locations: Tongzhou, near Beijing, Zhaoqing New Area, within the Pearl River Delta, and Zhengdong New District, near Zhengzhou, in Henan. Starting from these places, from the forms and the ways of their rapid transformation, the aim of the research was to open a broader observation on the Chinese urbanization in order to deal with the necessity of a radical rethinking of conceptualizations, projects and epistemology of the urban.
Keywords: New towns; China’s urbanization processes; contemporary city
