The study presented here deals with the role of urban design through the attempt to identify the nature of the most recent transformations of European cities. The authors present the methodology adopted and the first results of the case studies analysis, in progress within the research group cura-du_it. The analysis reveals some recurrent themes, eccentric with respect to the specific of urban design. Looking for such a specifity of urban design contribution, the authors have investigated the cases through some dichotomies identified in literature and practice. In the conclusion they identifiy some trends and then formulate the hypothesis of a methodology that brings the spatial, settlement, morphological and landscape aspects back to the center of urban design.
