Political parties enjoyed in the Italian legal order a great level of autonomy both inside and outside the Parliament because of their foundational role in the Republican experi-ence reflected also in the constitutional compromise. The autonomy of representative institutions seems to be dependent on the liberal model of democracy chosen by the Constituent Assembly in order to guarantee political actors and political process. The original reasons for this state of things were understandable and justifiable. However, it seems necessary to investigate whether they are still sustainable, also considering the end of those conventions of the constitutions that have been fundamental in maintaining the democratic and institutional system.
