Current studies into the Society of Jesus have focused on the institution's suppression in the 18th century and its subsequent restoration. Interest in this topic has soared, due also to the celebration of a long series of centenaries between 2009 and 2017. My essay analyses this historiographical trend, linking it to the three main perspectives of present- day Jesuit studies, inspired by researches into the history of the Society, by studies on the Enlightenment, and by the diffusion of Global or Connected History. One of the more interesting aspects of research into the Jesuits in the age of their suppression is undoubtedly the fact that, although formally their Order did not exist, they nevertheless played a decisive role at the crucial juncture between the end of the eighteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth; initially by attempting to "Christianize" the Enlightenment and later by endorsing the Restoration.
