The birth of the Italian nation is not the main subject of this book. Nevertheless, this event was a turning point in the worldwide history of Italy. The self-representation of the Italian nation, its universal ambition and the role of the State are at the core of a dialectical tension. Since 1861 Italian history has been influenced by both geography ad history. A strong conflict has arisen between those who keep recalling a mythical and irretrievable greatness and those who want a safe and peaceful life inside the national borders.

Keywords: Nation building, myth, state, geopolitics.
