The article provides a conceptual framework for interpreting the evolution of Italian regionalism. It analyzes the concept of autonomism, in its political and institutional dimensions, reflecting on its characteristics in relation to both regionalism and federalism. The ongoing process for the development of a differentiated regionalism in Italy marks the abandonment of federalism, which has long inspired institutional reforms, to embrace autonomism, which stems from the recognition of a territorial specificity and is characterized by asymmetry and variability in the distribution of power, and for bilateral relations between the Regions and the State.
