This study proposes a framework to assess the relationship between land-taking processes and carbon sequestration, considered as a regulating ecosystem service. This framework is implemented into the spatial context of Sardinia (Italy). Land cover features are analyzed through the Corine Land Cover nomenclature. Carbon sequestration is assessed by the spatial taxonomy of the Normalized difference vegetation index. The results entail important implications in terms of planning policy definition.

Keywords: Carbon sequestration; ecosystem services; land take; planning policies; normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI).
