The Alps are one of the most vulnerable areas to climate change in Europe; but the debate on adaptation strategies and actions is still mostly focused on the densely populated urban and coastal areas. This article presents the results of a survey on the practices of adaptation to climate change in the Alpine region of the Homogeneous zone of Pinerolo (45 municipalities in the Metropolitan city of Turin). The survey lets emerge a few barriers that can hinder adaptation in mountain contexts, or at least determine practices that are poorly systematic and ambitious: a perception of climate change merely in terms of more frequent extreme events, municipal hyper fragmentation, lack of effective horizontal and vertical governance, shortcoming of financial and knowledge resources.
