The scientific, cultural and political debate on soil consumption and regeneration of exist-ing heritage is pervasive. There is a need to shift the classical vision of economic rent (of land) through a mature dialogue in scientific knowledge, in order to build a different and more articulated system of land values that take in consideration soil and ecosystem ser-vices preservation. A new awareness can help to solve several historical issues in regional planning.
Keywords: Soil consumption; national legislation; sustainability; rent of land; economic value of soil.
