Documents from the Archivio di Stato di Catania regarding the history of the ars aromataria in Eastern Sicily between the fifteenth century and the nineteenth century: apothecaries, medicaments, "burniame" and ceramists

In this contribution some documents of the Archivio di Stato di Catania are examined. They refer to different aspects of the history of the Sicilian ars aromataria between the end of the fifteenth century and the beginning of the nineteenth century. These documents indeed highlight the operation of an- aromateria (pharmacy) in Randazzo of the fifteenth century and the issue some licences by Archiaters (supervisory doctors) to practise the above-mentioned art from the sixteenth century to the eighteenth century. They also highlight the medicaments available in two aromaterie in Biscari (today’s Acate) in the eighteenth century, the pottery commissioned to ceramists in the eighteenth century by the apothecaries and merchants from the area surrounding Caltagirone in order to store the medicaments and the prescriptions for the poor people living in Biscari in the nineteenth century.
