The 2016 earthquake between Umbria and Marche caused extensive damage in the territory of Arquata del Tronto. The complex of S. Francesco, in the hamlet of Borgo, has undergone significant damages, in particular the collapse of the roof; the church, the largest in the municipal area, in a central position with respect to the numerous hamlets, and owned by the Municipality, will be among the first buildings to be restored and to be returned to the local community. A program of surveys, studies and first diagnostic investigations made it possible to reveal traces of a particularly significant construction history and at the same time to direct the strategies for the restoration of the building and, perhaps, of the entire complex.
Keywords: 2016 earthquake; architectural restoration; Franciscan architecture
