In the postwar period, an aggressive property speculation led to a profound transformation of the Italian landscape. This process resulted from a lack of urban planning and the fragmentation of administrative and environmental competences. This article examines a specific case-study: the so-called "monster of Fuenti", an abusive hotel that was built along the coast the Amalfi Coast during the Seventies and was tore down after a thirty-year environmental battle. This case-study sheds light on the crucial role played by environmental associations such as Italia Nostra. The article is based on papers from Elena Croce’s archive, stored at the Fondazione Biblioteca Benedetto Croce, and from Antonio Iannello’s archive, stored at the municipality of Naples.
