After the dissolution of the Christian Democracy in Italy in the 1990s, the theme of the «Catholic party» has hardly been investigated, partly because it is no longer of interest in current politics. This article aims at providing an analysis of the studies on the origins of political Catholicism in Italy and underlining the importance of the early Christian Democracy, especially looking at such political personalities as Romolo Murri and Luigi Sturzo. Moving from the historical and intellectual anal-yses of this subject carried out since the beginning of the 20th century, it is possi-ble to highlight different cultural and political profiles in the Christian Democracy; to assess the relationship between the DC and the Popular Party; and to reap-praise such themes as freedom of conscience, political secularism, the pragmatic convergence between different Catholic and Socialist cultures, as well as the Catholics’ political unity. In the background, finally, is the ever-present issue of the reform of the Catholic Church, which became especially relevant during the years of the «modernist crisis» that shook the conscience of many believers.
