The introduction presents the theoretical framework in which the articles selected for this special issue unfold. Substantial or lived citizenship has emerged in the social sciences as a counterpoint to formal or legal citizenship. As such, it becomes the object of multiple practices and claims promoted by marginal individuals and groups, especially immigrants, including those in an irregular condition who are denied formal legal citizenship. It also becomes an expression of sense of belonging and active life of those who constantly risk being perceived as victims and essen-tially passive subjects of hostile structural and political constrains. Hence, the political mobilizations of immigrants and refugees are analyzed as acts of citizenship from below. Furthermore, as a phenomenon less investigated by this literature, we introduce here volunteering by people of immigrant origin as another form of citi-zenship from below and as a request, implicit or explicit, for full social recognition by the receiving societies.
Keywords: legal citizenship; citizenship from below; immigration; recognition; mobilisations; volunteering.
