The essay analyses the complaint campaign carried out by the Anti- Slavery Society of Italy against the buying and selling of slaves perpe- trated in Benadir. Specifically, the essay analyses the investigation conducted in 1903 by geographer Rebecchi Brichetti. His work caused a no- table scandal in public opinion, as it demonstrated that slavery was still so widespread and deep-rooted in Benadir that it remained accepted even among Italian institutions. The Anti-Slavery Society of Italy did not, however, aim to condemn the incompetence of the Italian administration but rather to demonstrate the urgent need for the involvement of a Catho lic mission alongside the government to manage the Somali territory. The members of the Society in fact were lay catholics who had begun to deal with national problems by proposing as a solution an alliance between State and Church in internal politics and in Italian expansion in Africa.
