The recent book by Alex J. Kay, Empire of Destruction (2021) is reviewed in order to present an updated overview of the literature on Nazi mass killings. Major interpretative hypotheses relating to the perpetrators’ behavior are discussed, such as cumulative radicalization (Broszat) and bureaucratic rationality (Bauman, Browning).
