Historically, prisons are the place where the Italian penitentiary system fails to translate its high inspirational values into spaces for minimum everyday life quality and treatment activities that should favor the social reintegration of the inmates. In the face of an outdated and inadequate building stock, the construction of a design knowledge aimed at modifying the existing prisons, through the investigation of their forms and of the practices they host, can be an effective way to deal with their critical conditions. Since some years, this design knowledge is the goal of a research program that has found an innovative way to reflect upon and design the practices and spaces dedicated to sport and physical activity in prison.
