Between the end of the 18th and the middle of the 19th centuries, Europe experienced the emergence of a modern press, which sparked, in subsequent years, a vibrant historiography. After the Second World War, a highly political and content-focused academic history of the press emerged, and it wasn’t until the 1990s that we reached a pluralistic history of the media that revived earlier paradigms and topics covered in the developing “newspaper’s civilization”. This article seeks to present a historiographical overview that contrasts research between pre-unitary Italian States, with less advanced but nevertheless significant journalistic development, and France, which was at the forefront of the press boom.
Keywords: Media History; History of communication; History of journalism; Nineteenth-century Press; History of Media Studies; Studies in Print Culture.
