Political conflict in Italy in the age of revolutions, the war of national unification in 1860-1861, and the civil war in Southern Italy after the unification have recently undergone a deep historiographical renewal. Building on these innovative strands of research, the article reconstructs the biographies of a varied sample of individuals, mainly of peasant stock, who joined the Neapolitan legitimist guerrilla warfare and po litical brigandage either as members of the armed gangs or of their support networks. The intersections between experience and culture explain personal choices that led to taking up arms against the new national-liberal order. Thus, the article provides insight into the experiences of people from an illiterate society who turned into counterrevo- lutionary fighters by renewing traditional banditry through contact with the new 19th- Century politics and its imaginaries.
Keywords: Revolution, Civil Warfare, Risorgimento, Politicisation, Banditry, Social Imaginaries.
