This contribution aims to highlight how Franco Cazzola’s essay has the merit of carrying out a systematic examination of the vast production of research on the territorial transformations of the lower Po Valley along three centuries, from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century, interweaving it with a direct and in-depth knowledge of archival sources. What emerges is an interpretation that allows us to grasp the planning character of the enterprise, the collaboration between technicians linked to different powers, and the geopolitical use of water governance, aspects that in sectorial readings and on single episodes remain in the shadows. A fresco enlightened by the contextualization of individual elements and the recomposition into a non-trivial picture of very diverse and at the same time closely related tesserae.
Keywords: landscape, reclamation, hydraulics, technicians
