The EU directives adopted in 2018 and 2019 as part of the Clean Energy Package have created a new entity: the energy community. After a first transitory transposition, Italy fully implemented the EU regulations into its national law in December 2021. Notwithstanding its scarce diffusion in the Italian market, energy communities have great potential, as well as their possible contribution to the 2030-renew-able-energy consumption goals. This paper aims at describing the adoption model for energy communities Italy is choosing to pursue, at highlighting the yet-untackled points, and at discussing the strengths and weaknesses of the Italian legislation. It also dwells on some key aspects that might condition the coming success and usefulness of this new entity. Lastly, this paper displays the answers to a survey designed and delivered by Laboratorio REF Ricerche, whose main goal was to probe the level of knowledge and initiative regarding energy communities by companies active in the energy sector.
