Inequalities in income and wealth have characterized all social structures that have appeared in human history and they have gradually become more relevant in recent decades in the political debate in the most industrialized countries. The inequalities, however measured, have increased. Neoliberalism and deregulation, which have characterized recent economic policies, are the key words for understanding the relationship between institutions and inequality in recent decades. The aim of this contribution is to synthetically analyse from a microeconomic point of view the causes of poverty and reason on the proposed and potentially feasible income support schemes, focusing on the unconditional basic income. The final part of the contribution proposes a simulation of the setting up of a measure based on unconditional basic income in Italy, under the condition that the financial sustainability of the measure is entirely financed through the taxation of individuals.
Keywords: poverty, unconditional basic income, inequality, taxation
