PUSH is research developed between 2019 and 2021. The Neapolitan research group, coordinated by Prof. Laura Lieto, used this opportunity to develop a reflection on the condition of contemporary living in many residential neighbourhoods in the Italian suburbs. The research reflects also on the idea that these places represent the results of the contradiction between the architectural principles on which they found and the life of the individuals that takes place in them. The title of the article aims to denounce the extraordinary dichotomy characterizing many of these residential complexes; a dichotomy which, on the one hand, determines the many contradictions and criticalities of these neighbourhoods and, on the other, can represent the starting point for a regeneration strategy based on a real process of progressive knowledge and appropriation of places and contexts.
Keywords: urban rehabilitation, open spaces architecture, social housing, local communities, informal economy, design of publicness.
