A comparison with others, with boundaries, is necessary to develop a symbolic func-tion. The representation of reality must be periodically deconstructed and reconstructed with new materials to remain subjectively significant. A clinical case is presented to ex-emplify how complex the journey towards adulthood can be, a journey towards the un-known, with an outcome not obvious, that can evoke even intense anguish. The crisis of adolescence can bring out pre-existing structural fragilities and ambiguities, touching the delicate balance of the person, inevitably poised between an internal and an external world, and who does not always find comfort when trying to be reflected in the figures of reference.
