Luigi Einaudi’s economic and political thought is thoroughly valued and studied. However, his contributions to the construction of a European neo-liberal canon in the 1930’s and 1940’s are often overlooked. This paper aims to shed light on the point, in order to reassert early neo-liberalism’s identity as well. We will focus, then, on Einaudi’s and European neo-liberals’ shared belief in the need to rearrange the framework of free market economy, while criticizing some aspects of contemporary western civilization and facing the challenge of developing a liberal approach to mass democracy.
Keywords: Neo-liberalism; third way; market economy; democracy; civilization.
