In 2018, the World Health Organization (WHO) introduced a new diagnostic category in ICD-11: Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (Complex PTSD). WHO’s purpose is to focus the attention of clinicians and researchers on the impact that trauma has on a person’s self-organizing system. The diagnosis of complex PTSD can also affect children and adolescents, and is particularly important in cases of multi-traumatized adoptees, such as institutionalized children, to guide their care. Comments are reported to support the importance of making an accurate early diagnosis, the need to use treatments with efficiency data, and to adequately inform and support family members when their loved one shows signs of emotional dysregulation and other trauma symptoms.
Keywords: complex post-traumatic stress disorder, early diagnosis, emotional dysregulation, adoption.
