This article analyses the structure of mutual aid societies operating in Mediterranean Europe between 1848 and 1865. Comparing the features of several trade union’s statutes elaborated in France, Genoa, and the major cities of Andalusia during the decade that followed the European midcentury revolutions and ended with the founda- tion of the International Workingmen’s Association, this paper attempts to demonstrate the existence of a unique republican association model built around the same democra- tic values and the existence of similarity extends to organizational aspects, such as the general assembly and the mutual fund. Statutes were not limited to defining the mem- bers rights and duties but tendeed to make in the educational and moralization mission the primary aim of republican mutual aid.
Keywords: trade union, mutual aid, republicans, working-class, socialism.
