This article explores the dominance of English in Italian academia, linking it to broad- er issues such as bureaucratic evaluation mechanisms and the impact of globalization on European culture and historical disciplines. The author reflects on his personal ex- perience within the Italian and American academic systems, emphasizing that the widespread use of English is both a symptom of the Americanization of Italian acade- mia and a consequence of globalization. In his view, the quality of writing is decaying due to the increasing emphasis on quantity over quality in publications—a major out- come of the bureaucratic evaluation system—and because everyone is reading less. Ul- timately, the article argues that the real challenge lies in reassessing the role of histori- cal research in a rapidly changing global and technological context.
Keywords: English, Globalization, Italian academic system, American academic system.
