The presence of emotional regulation (ER) difficulty represents a transdiagnostic factor of various psychopathological conditions and neurodevelopmental disorders, including Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While the core symptoms of ADHD primarily involve deficits in attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity, ER appears to play a crucial role in understanding impairments in executive functioning. ER is closely correlated with the progressive development of executive functions (EF), whose precursors can be observed as early as the first three years of life. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of ER and EF in early childhood development, with a focus on how developmental trajectories, in the presence of risk factors, may serve as potential precursors to ADHD onset. At this early stage of life, the acquisition of developmental milestones is influenced by both biological factors (e.g., temperament) and environmental factors (e.g., the quality of early relationships). Accordingly, attention will be given to the role of individual differences and parenting styles in shaping ER and EF development. Furthermore, evidence will be presented on how parental ER and EF may have an impact on both these developmental domains in children. Finally, the discussion will explore how existing research findings can inform the design of parenting support programs. When implemented early, such interventions may prove effective in mitigating emotional and behavioral difficulties in children, including reducing ADHD-related symptoms.
