In the contemporary socio-economic context - governed by efficiency metrics and an almost “performative” conception of work - the professional inclusion of persons with disabilities confronts cultural and organizational dispositive that tend to normalize difference rather than re-design normalcy. This essay advances a unified theoretical-methodological framework for the school to work transition grounded in the bio-psycho-social perspective (ICF), the principle of Reasonable Accommodation (CRPD), and Universal Design for Learning (UDL). After examining the mechanisms of prejudice and the shift from “duty” to “right,” it argues for the value of work as an identity-forming and citizenship-enabling device; for the role of schools and of the P.C.T.O. (Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation) as a formative bridge; for the “ambivalent” and ongoing role of the tutor (school-based, workplace-based, and peer); and for the need to build inter-institutional networks oriented toward a relational model of welfare. Finally, it discusses implications for career guidance and for the prevention of school disengagement and dropout, offering a set of operational recommendations to integrate the Piano Educativo Individualizzato (PEI, Individualized Education Plan), P.C.T.O., and targeted job placement within a coherent Life Project design.
