Italian schools have progressively evolved their approach from a care model to an inclusive model, placing the person as a whole at the center and enhancing differences and potential. Although it represents a fundamental tool for the personalization of pathways, the Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) has limitations related to the focus on the school dimension and fragmentation with respect to other areas of life. In this context, self-determination emerges as a right and skill to be promoted, shifting the focus from scholastic adaptation to existential planning, guaranteeing the person an active role in defining his or her own path.
The article focuses on the inhomogeneity between IEP and Life Project, two tools of great pedagogical value that need to be integrated, highlighting the central role of the school in the promotion of inclusive trajectories and in the construction of quality of life.
