This study examines evaluation cultures and practices in socio-educational services in the Brescia area, managed by Third Sector organizations. The observational research focuses on the frequency of evaluation, its purposes, the dimensions considered, the methods employed, and the ways results are used. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire administered to the coordinators of 87 services (valid responses = 74).
Findings indicate that evaluation is more widespread in larger and more structured services, particularly where training initiatives on evaluation have been implemented. Formative purposes are strongly emphasized, followed by accountability functions. Needs, satisfaction, and effectiveness are frequently assessed, while processes and impacts receive less systematic attention. The use of results is mainly directed toward the improvement of interventions.
Overall, the findings provide an encouraging picture, but also point to the need for greater investment in the evaluation of broad and transformative processes and impacts. The study further underscores the strategic role of both initial and in-service training on evaluation in fostering the dissemination of methodologically robust and rigorous practices.
