This article traces the origins and development of the silk industry in Catania between the 15th and 18th centuries, a manufacturing hub that rivalled the betterknown centre in Messina. The author demonstrates how the centuries-long existence of this proto-industrial sector gave rise to a skilled artisan workforce and fostered dynamic processes of economic and social growth in the city.
