Drawing on a wide range of archival and published sources, this article examines the origins and development of the Christian Democratic Party in Apulia between 1943 and 1946, focusing on the emergence of the first leadership group and the establishment of party structures at the local level. It highlights the party’s programmatic and operational lines, internal divisions, the debate over the institutional question, youth mobilization, and the formation of a widespread regional leadership. The elections of 2 June 1946 marked a shift from a militant and (at least partly) republican leadership to a more moderate one. Nevertheless, the legacy of those early years would leave a lasting imprint on the party’s subsequent trajectory.
