This article examines how the belated protection of Italian immigrant heritage in Brazil has affected its preservation, management and contemporary appreciation, taking Urussanga, Santa Catarina, as a case study. It argues that the conservation policies implemented in Brazil in 1937 prioritised the Luso Brazilian colonial legacy while neglecting heritage linked to Italian immigration, which was only recognised as heritage decades later. Even after of?cial listing, limited appreciation persisted, often resulting in inappropriate interventions in protected properties and their surroundings. By exploring the gap between formal protection and effective valorisation, the study highlights the need to align preservation efforts with urban planning and to adopt a holistic conservation strategy.
