The aim of the article is to clarify the systematic connection between three functions of abstraction in Hegel’s Science of Logic: historical, pedagogical, and epistemological. Section 1 addresses the historical function of abstraction, analyzes two different meanings of abstraction and develops the problems concerning the circular relation of the Logic to the history of philosophy. Section 2 considers the role of abstraction in Hegel’s understanding of formation (Bildung) and the sort of freedom that is involved in this process. Section 3 deals with the epistemological function, which is related to the position of abstraction in the order of conceptual knowledge and, at a higher level, to the status or value of the Logic within Hegel’s conception of philosophy as science.

Keywords: abstraction, logic, idealism, concept, presurrppositionlessness, science.
