Recent labour market reforms have identified the apprenticeship as a priority channel for the entry of young people into the labour market. However, data on its adoption show that it is often misused in order to reduce labour costs and increase workforce flexibility. This article proposes a reflection which, by relating apprenticeship to the evolution of production systems, analyzes how and to what extent different work systems have helped (or hindered) the apprenticeship contract in achieving its aim to support the professional development of young people. In order to do this, we introduce a classification of business activities based on two variables: knowledge creation procedure and content of work. We propose that apprenticeships are the most suitable tools to support the professional development of modern craftsmen
