The project of a school complex located in Cernusco sul Naviglio (Milan), conceived for a competition in 2011, anticipated the indications of the 2013 national guidelines for school buildings with specific reference to the interpretation of new schools as a collective space, which could be extensively open for civic uses. The analysis of the project, completed and inaugurated in 2017, reveals the determining role of the relationship between the various actors involved in the process and proposes a critical evaluation of the outcomes, including the variations from the original plan and layout. The project reveals an inclusive perspective, enhanced by a device that makes an innovative use of space technically possible, delivering to the promoter, which in this case is a Municipality, the keys to activate and manage a new community centre. The objective of the architectural design is to make evident and expressive the symbolic role of the building and its use values.
