Networks are essential today for the competitive survival and economic growth of high-cost countries, such as Italy, in which higher added value needs to be extracted from production to offset the disadvantages the enterprises face in terms of labour costs and environmental resources (raw materials, pollution, regulations). Having acknowledged that protectionism is an impossible choice, the most viable option is that of building networks as cognitive multipliers of the knowledge and know-how of enterprises. Networks are the most effective circuit available to access the knowledge of others and to widen the base for the re-utilization of a company’s proprietary knowhow. This is because they provide enterprises with a reliable and efficient channel for exchange and sharing that safeguards their independence while stimulating specialisation and complementariness.
