Italy has not ignored the tremendous dynamism that has arisen in the trade and investment relations with Japan, China, Korea and South-East Asian Countries.

In the past few years Italian trade flows with these countries have attained record levels, while after years of hesitancy the number of Italian enterprises operating and investing in Pacific Asia has considerably increased, even bypassing the most official evaluations.

There is, however, the critical issue of providing for the long term a more solid foundation for closer partnership between Europe/Italy and Pacific Asia, namely by building up concerted linkages between the major actors (i.e. the government and private/public enterprises), with the view of attaining easier economic cooperation, as well as understanding the very broad Sino-Japanese-Asian cultural environment.

On this major issue fifty prominent scholars and managers gathered at Europe's oldest university centre to provide their most valuable contributions to the fostering of a mutually beneficial cooperation on the horizon of the 21st century.

Gian Paolo Casadio coordinated the scientific and organizational aspects of the international colloquium on "The cooperation between Europe/Italy-China-Korea and South-East Asian Countries., held on the occasion of the Ninth Centennial of the University of Bologna.
