This work addresses the diplomatic action of Folco Trabalza during his mandate as Italian ambassador in Belgrade between 1967 and 1971. Drawing on primary sources from the Archivio Centrale dello Stato, Archivio storico del Senato della Repubblica, Archivio storico della Presidenza della Repubblica in Rome and the Arhiv Jugoslavije in Belgrade, the present essay highlights the role played by the Italian diplomat in opening the secret negotiating channel which was to lead to the conclusion of the Osimo agreements in 1975. This work concludes that, faced with the political ambiguity and weakness of the Christian-Democratic leadership, Trabalza interpreted himself as a factor of continuity of Italian interests in the Balkan region, successfully proposing the opening of dialogue among experts in order to settle the border dispute between Italy and Yugoslavia.
