The Article analyses some early writings of the Italian psychologist and psychoanalyst Cesare Musatti (1897-1989), published between 1924 and 1938. The purpose of this analysis is to show from a historical, biographical and critical perspective the emergence and development of a precise and original epistemological reflection in the young Musatti, in particular with regard to the analysis of the relationship between science and philosophy, the concept of "empirical reality" and the foundation of psychology as a science, the "logical" function of the irrational in the construction of scientific theory, and the epistemological status of psychology as an autonomous and pluralistic discipline.

Keywords: Cesare Musatti, history of psychology, epistemology, empirical reality, conventionalism
