This script translates the attempt to turn into a dialogical form some of the main arguments emerged from the PhD thesis Materials for a sociology of the book: sense, representations and symbolic meanings of the book in late modernity. In particular, this investigation focuses on the current changes in the practice of reading and writing, and on the estimation of new possible ones. The two characters on stage interpret two distinct approaches to the key question: will new multimedia devices and various digital media make obsolete the object ‘book’ as we - modern men, sons of printing press - have known so far? Will the new era necessarily mark the dis- solution of the civilisation of the book?
