The New Wto Negotiations: Opportunity or Threat? - This paper sets out to examine the reasons why globalisation often takes on decidedly negative connotations, focusing on three particularly significant aspects. The first lies in the observation that the potential benefits of open-door economies tend to a decidedly uneven spread among both the various countries and the various economic areas, and moreover among the different components of society within the individual countries and economic areas. Another reason why many see globalisation as a threat rather than an opportunity derives from fears about its possible repercussions on the environment. Finally, a further cause of aversion to globalisation may be found in the greater awareness it has itself brought about - and will increasingly do so in the coming years - of drastic downsizing of national sovereignty in the economic field. For this very reason, however, the most appropriate solution lies in increasingly extensive and deep-reaching forms of cooperation between the nation states and enhancement of the international economic institutions.
