The need for better understanding of the interaction between social and environmental dynamics triggered by large-scale irrigation development calls for a research approach that must be genuinely multidisciplinary. On the whole, the social sciences have contributed little so far to studies on irrigation, even though irrigation schemes are an excellent place for the observation of social change; engineers are increasingly aware, however, that the problems encountered cannot be solved through technical solutions that do not integrate the human factor.
