The study of appropriate indicators to measure the quality of life is in continous evolution. In particular, there is not an objective way to compare alternative summary methods. The present study concerns the construction of statistical indicators to describe the quality of life in the 103 italian provinces. We present ten models: sum of ranks, mean of ranks, index numbers, trasformation via range of variation, standardization, percentualisation, distance from an ideal unity, first principal component, first factor, weighted mean of the factors. We propose three criteria to compare such models. From the considered application, the best models are those based on the mulvivariate analysis: first principal component, first factor, weighted mean of the factors.
