The aim of this note is to review the present state of research on multiple achievement goals in the school, as a topic currently relevant for motivational psychology. A brief excursus on the main definitions of the constructs relevant for achievement goals is presented. Then, the main theoretical models are described, from the normative achievement goal theory, for which mastery goals have positive effects while performance goals have negative effects, to the multiple goal theory, which put into crisis this statement and argue that a person can pursue at the same time different goals. Finally, reference is made to the more recent research tendencies, which underline the urgency to consider both non academic goals and the influence of contextual factors in the scholastic context.
