For decades now, there has been much discussion about the impact of digital technology on urban society. This paper stresses that today, with the advent of wireless, digital technology is emerging into the space between home and workplace: streets, squares, parks, restaurants, shopping centers, meeting, and cultural places where much of our civic and social life occurs. Likewise, cities around the world Helsinki, Seoul, Zaragoza, Salford in the UK, New York, and many others are seeking to create new places that take advantage of these advances. They recognize the extraordinary potential of a digital public realm to enhance community and liveability, while making their cities more connected to the world and more competitive in the global market for IT companies and their workers.
