Work and the human person today ABSTRACT: Work has been defined in several different ways and has suffered from a twofold division: first, between end and means, and second, between subject and object of production. In the ancient paradigm, work runs the risk of being ejected from the anthropological horizon and down-graded to a mere instrument; on the contrary, in the modern paradigm, work becomes so important as to prevent human beings from any self-realization in other domain than work itself and to generate the risk of a self-exploitation of the person. However, is it possible to overcome both extremes? In contemporary age, there is a shift from the work society to the society of (multiple) works, and work itself is connected with many other components of the person. The person, however, is not only work. Therefore, only if it is balanced with action and contemplation, work can be fully assumed by the person and can pursue its highest meaning, without any risk of one-sidedness.
